Headlights 05:05
I never pushed you away I hate that thought I never tried to make you stay Oh no that wouldn’t be what I want Everybody’s talking about me behind my back Yeah I know that I couldn’t give a damn what they say All I give a damn about is Getting away First you see the headlights Then you see car First you see the headlights Then you see the darkness First you see the headlights Then you feel the glass Last thing you see is headlights Then you feel the darkness First you see the headlights Then you see the car First you see the headlights Then you see the darkness First you see the headlights Then you hit the glass Last thing you see is headlights Then you feel the darkness

Corridor 03:31
Straight up the corridor and into the light why’d she never see me coming Anything can happen in the heat of the night Man you should’ve seen me running I had this feeling something wasn’t right And next thing I am in the gutter I chose to stay there and put up a fight How dare they fucking run me over Come on take me away oh Next thing I knew it I was down on the ground Just trying to get on the shoulder All of these faces just peering down And waiting for me to roll over It’s never easy woking this end of town And harder when your in a coma The vision fades and so does the sound You’ve got to get into the moment Come on take me away oh Come on take mw away oh Straight up the corridor and into the light They put me back into the oven Give me that morphine and give me the fight I’m ready I am feeling nothing Beautiful people and a beautiful sight I’m determined to get some air Yeah I am stronger I’ve grown in height I never was even scared Oh come on take me away ooh Come on take me away Come on take me away Come on take me away yeah Come on take me away Yeah

I’ve gotta get the poison out Suck it out the vain Makes you scream shout Oh my god the pain Like a one inch punch to the head Or maybe a slap in the face The sweat the heat the feel The sticky on your skin Tell me what’s the deal How is this any kind of win I’ve gotta get the poison out Suck it out the vain Makes you scream shout Oh my god the pain Like a one inch punch to the head Maybe a slap in the face Take your eyes off the screen boy Go look about the place Inside its steaming I’m waiting for the wind There’s dark clouds on my horizon Come on wash the hate away I’ve gotta get the poison out Suck it out the vain Makes you scream shout Oh my god the pain Like a one inch punch to the head Maybe a slap in the face Take your eyes off the screen boy Go look about the place

I hope we never meet again You want it I got it you gotta take some Oh mama It’s a fine fine line between what yours and mine She really fucked me Took all my money It wasn’t funny Should’ve seen it coming That’s when it struck me She took all my money It wasn’t funny Thank god for mummy Why would anybody care I hope we never meet again You want it I got it you gotta take some You gotta take some

We sit around and kick back for days You can skin a cat in number of ways She slips through the cracks wherever she goes Can’t quite believe all the people she knows Ooh don’t say I didn’t warn ya Don’t say I never told ya We sit around and wind back the years All these first world problems like where are the beers Yeah there’s too much shit going into your ears uh huh So you just sit around and wind back the years Ooh don’t say I didn’t warn ya Don’t say I never told ya Ooh don’t say I didn’t warn ya Don’t say I never told ya Always hanging out with the same old small fries Ooh don’t say I didn’t warn ya Don’t say I never told ya Ooh don’t say I didn’t warn ya Don’t say I never told ya

Heart Attack 04:57
Everybody sees a man on his knees Everyone agrees that’s where he should be Could’ve played us just one more song Who’d have known what was wrong Friends have left and there’s no one around But there’s plenty of business back in town Up and down the halls you look for a gun Up and down the walls like setting sun Can’t get forward Can’t get back It’s a heart attack Who would want Any of that It’s a heart attack So hard to think to escape from it all Shits so desperate you can’t wait to fall You been through angst you been through the rage Who would expect this at this late stage You’ve got your music got your wealth and fame But you still got those demons and it’s such a shame Your no longer young but your not even old The fire starter has gone cold Can’t get forward Can’t get back It’s a heart attack Who would want Any of that It’s a heart attack You can’t get forward Can’t get back It’s a heart attack

Hanging around to see what goes down Being the fool beats being clown Watching and waiting hesitating comme ci comme ça commiserating I’m reading into things too hard Is it real is it love I took too much Who is the stranger you took to the dance Is there any danger is there any chance They say life is game and you’ve got to win at it You’ve got to get to the top but there’s nothing in it Not at all I’m reading into things too hard Is it real is it love I took too much again Let’s not pretend Yeah I took too much I’m reading into things too hard Is it real is it love I took too much again Let’s not pretend Yeah I took too much It’s time for this to end I took too much

about

Written in the aftermath of the event that nearly killed him, Back From The Brink chronicles the New York hit-and-run that left Bobby Burgess in a coma, far from home, fighting for his life. Over the next two years, the Perth-born musician would embark on an arduous journey of rehabilitation and recovery that would leave him scarred but miraculously back on his feet.

Written, performed and produced by Burgess, Back From The Brink is an autobiography in the realest, grittiest sense. Opening with the starkly revealing Headlights, the album takes its listeners on a confronting, often uncomfortable lyrical journey as Burgess recalls his ordeal. 'First you see the headlights / then you see the darkness' he sings, surrounded by minimalistic beats and sparse, melancholic guitar lines. Though in spite of its harrowing subject matter and Spartan delivery, Back From The Brink is still filled with Burgess' musical trademark of virtuosic blues-based riffery.

Widely regarded as a guitar hero in his hometown (having melted faces in bands such as Long Gone Midnight and the much-loved Scotch Of Saint James) Bobby introduces an entirely new side of his artistic psyche with Back From The Brink – taking his staple of porch-ready blues and painting it in darker, far more sinister tones. The result is captivating to say the least... a kind of Keith Richards classicism weaponised into something modern and ferocious.

Lyrically and vocally, Back From The Brink bares a lot of Bobby's soul – from the obvious recounting of his near-death experience, to hints of a tumultuous breakup, heartache and existential crisis. Yet, within this tempest he manages to have a lot of fun. From the infectious boogie of Sugar Daddy, to the perfectly Homme-esque Get The Poison Out, to hints of Bowie on Took Too Much, Burgess' inexhaustible love of music manifests in a colourful variety of styles, moods and tones.

After a decade at the forefront of the Perth music scene, Bobby Burgess has arrived at an excitingly different place, albeit via a dark path. His previous, oft-talked-about accomplishments as a guitarist are now matched by his dexterity as a vocalist, and sheer creative freedom as a songwriter. Back From The Brink draws a close to the bleakest period of his life while simultaneously inking the page on an exciting new chapter. Honest, bold and daring, it is the album that will define his entire career.
